More about us…

TetraGear was founded by the Tetra Society of North America, a non-profit organization that recruits volunteers to design and build custom devices for people with disabilities. In 2008, one of Tetra’s employees was struck by a car while crossing the street in his wheelchair. This identified a major issue: people who use wheelchairs and scooters are vulnerable every time they commute outdoors.

In the years following the accident, Tetra’s volunteer team developed, refined, and installed over 60 safety light prototypes around Vancouver, BC. In February 2015, TetraGear was incorporated as a social venture to turn these prototypes into a robust product that can be made available for everybody, while creating a sustainable source of revenue for other non-profit community initiatives. TetraGear has just finished a successful Kickstarter campaign, raising more than $70,000 to bring this innovative product to market for wheelchair users, cyclists and other commuters, and orders are continuing to come in.

Eric’s Story

One morning in November 2008, Eric Molendyk was commuting to work at the Tetra Society in his electric wheelchair when he was hit by a vehicle. Even though he was wearing reflective gear and had the right of way, the driver just didn’t see him.

After months of recovery, Eric sat down with Tetra’s volunteer engineers to brainstorm how he and other wheeled commuters could always be visible while riding outdoors. Inspired to create a superior safety light, the team began to develop what would eventually become TetraGear lights. Today, Eric and everyone at TetraGear is thrilled to finally offer this innovative solution to the public!
